Actually, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's The Strain trilogy is supposed to trace vampirism back to its biblical roots (I have a feeling it's a kind of plague, though they didn't give any hints in the first book).

Judas, as the betrayer of Jesus and a suicide, is also supposed to be the first vampire. Dracula 2000 and The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice explored this theme.

Interesting about Lilith and Cain -- I didn't know that bit about the sharing of her blood, and I thought I knew alot about Lilith! But she is the mother of demons, and she's long been tied to vampires (even in my own book).

Vampires have always been my kinda obvious "secret obsession." From sesame street, to....and I'm embarrassed as I write this...Big Bad Beetle Borgs. I watched that show because of the monsters in that house. (And of course the much better show/books/and movies that I don't need to list.)

Umm, as far as the "zombie mystique" goes, it just taps in to a different basic human instinct than vampires. Survivalist, definitely: who doesn't love long convos about "if you had to fight for your life with only a hedge trimmer"? Also fear of the afterlife, and the whole gorey fascination thing most of us has going. Not everything interesting has to be sexy.

My question is why the fighting? The vampire/zombies mythos has been coexisting peacefully for years. I call it horror film stratification: if I want something smart, sexy, and blood-gorey, I go find myself a vampire flick. When I'm interested in pure primal survivalist stuff with usually comedy and body-gorey, I go to the zombie flicks. I usually really like zombie movies because I love the thought "what if I am really, legitimately trapped?" That scares the crap out of me.

I think what Emma Stone was trying to say is that people are more ready to believe zombies over vampires because their mythos is usually loosely based on some made up science. Slap the word "Virus" on it and the modern audience will believe anything is possible. Though they have tried that tactic in many vampire movies (Ultraviolet, Underworld, and that new Ethan Hawke movie to name a few), it never works quite so well as when they use the virus excuse in zombie movies. It's quite simple: virus outbreak, people go bat-sh** crazy. Perfectly logical reason to start mowing people down with a Zamboni.

I'm pretty sure the vampire and zombie crazes feed each other. Case in point: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, THEN Mr. Darcy, Vampyre. Coincidence? I think not.

I do realize this is a bit of an old post, but here it goes anyway.

Why did you believe them? I'm not saying it's wholly impossibe they were real, but after those National Geographic docu's about those people who called themselves vampires but er..were clearly just delusional ( albeit seemingly smart )...Sorry if this is annoying, I don't doubt your experience made quite an impression, but well. There are quite a lot of people who'd like others to believe they are something more (not just vampires, by the way ). And they are usually very good at tricking people into believing them.

Anyway! I'd like to ask...what is it like seeing religions evolve e.g. was the mithras cultus much of an influence on christianity? If you exist, that means apparently lack of understanding on decomposition didn't (solely) create the vampire myth; then what did create our current myths? Do you see yourself as undead anyway, or does it work somewhat differently?

I have a feeling I am REALLY embarrasing myself by replying seriously to what most probabbly is a joke, judging by the fact that your blog is fun in general. :P Oh well. That's what happens when you don't have any dignity and are unashamedly pseudo-naive. :D
